Pragmatics and Semantics

Many contemporary philosophical approaches to pragmatics focus on semantics. Brandom, for example is a focus on the meaning of words (albeit from a pragmatic perspective).

Others choose an approach that is more holistic to pragmatics, such as relevance theory, which aims to determine how an utterance is perceived by the person listening. But this approach tends to overlook other aspects of pragmatism like epistemic debates about truth.

What exactly is pragmatism?

Pragmatism is a philosophical perspective that offers a viable alternative to analytic philosophy and continental philosophy. It was initiated by Charles Sanders Peirce. It was extended by his colleague and friend William James, and later developed by Josiah Royce. It was influential in areas of inquiry ranging from theology to philosophy of science however, it also found a place within ethics and politics, philosophy of language, aesthetics and social theory. The pragmatist tradition continues grow.

The pragmatic maxim is at the core of classical pragmatics. It is a rule that clarifies the meaning of hypotheses by examining their 'practical implications', or their implications for the experiences of specific situations. This gives rise to a distinctive epistemological outlook that is a type of 'inquiry-based epistemology' as well as an anti-Cartesian explication of the rules that govern inquiry. The early pragmatists were divided on whether pragmatism was a scientific philosophy that adopted a monism regarding truth (following Peirce) or a broad alethic pluralitism (James & Dewey).

A major concern for pragmatist philosophers is how to understand knowledge. Certain pragmatists like Rorty tend to be skeptical of knowledge that is based on a foundation of 'immediate experiences. Others, like Peirce and James, are sceptical of the correspondence theory of truth, according to which true beliefs are those that reflect reality 'correctly'.

Other issues in pragmatism include the relationship between belief and reality and the nature of human rationality, the importance of virtues and values and the significance of life. Pragmatists have also developed a broad range of theories and methods in fields like semiotics and philosophy of language, the philosophy of religion as well as ethics, philosophy of science, and theology. Some, such as Peirce and Royce are epistemological relativists, while others believe that such relativity is a serious misguided idea. The latter half of the 20th century saw a revival of interest in classical pragmatics. This led to a number new developments. This includes the concept of a "near-side" pragmatics which is concerned with the resolution of ambiguity indexicals, demonstratives, and anaphors, as well as the "far-side" pragmatics that looks at the semantics in discourses.

Semantics and Pragmatics are often seen as being at opposite ends of the continuum, with semantics on the close side and pragmatickr pragmatics on the other. Carston, for example, argues that there are at least three general lines of contemporary pragmatics that are: those who see it as a philosophy based on the lines of Grice; those who focus on its interaction with grammar and those who are concerned with utterance interpretation. Near-side pragmatics encompasses issues such as the resolution of ambiguity, the use of proper names, indexicals, demonstratives, anaphoras, and presupposition. It is also believed to address some issues that involve specific descriptions.

What is the relation between pragmatics and semantics?

The study of pragmatics is the study and application of meanings in the language of a particular context. It is a part of linguistics which studies the way that people utilize language to convey various meanings. It is often contrasted with semantics, which looks at the literal meaning of words in sentences or in larger chunks of discourse.

The relationship between pragmatics, semantics and their interrelationships is complicated. The main distinction is that pragmatics takes into account different factors other than the literal meanings of words, such as the intended meaning and context that a statement was made. This lets a more naive understanding to be made of the meaning of a phrase. Semantics also focuses on the relationship between words, whereas pragmatics is more concerned with the interactions between interlocutors (people engaged in conversations) and their contextual characteristics.

In recent decades Neopragmatism has primarily focused on the philosophy of metaphilosophy and language. As such, it has largely left behind classical pragmatism's metaphysics and value theory. Some neopragmatists, however, are working on developing a metaethics based on the principles of classical pragmatism on pragmatics and experiences.

Classical pragmatism was first developed by Charles Sanders Peirce and William James. Both were influential thinkers who wrote numerous books. Their works are still widely regarded today.

Although pragmatism offers an alternative to the analytic and continental philosophical mainstream, it's not without critics. Some philosophers, like have argued that deconstructionism is not a truly new philosophical approach and that pragmatism merely represents an expression.

In addition to these critics, the pragmatism movement was shattered by technological and scientific developments. For example, pragmatists have struggled to reconcile their views on science with the development of evolutionary theory, which was created by a non-pragmatist Richard Dawkins.

Despite these difficulties, pragmatism continues to grow in its popularity throughout the world. It is a third alternative to Continental and analytic philosophical traditions, and has a wide range of practical application. It is a growing field of study. Many schools of thought have evolved and incorporated elements of pragmatism within their own philosophy.
